ABU DHABI – The Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) has awarded a Letter of Award to ALEC Engineering and Contracting for the development of Sphere Abu Dhabi, a large-scale immersive entertainment venue set to become one of the emirate’s most ambitious tourism landmarks.

Valued at $1.7 billion, the project marks a significant expansion of ALEC’s portfolio in high-profile infrastructure delivery.

The venue will be constructed on Yas Island, reinforcing the island’s position as a global entertainment destination. Completion is expected to align with Abu Dhabi’s long-term tourism growth strategy.

Under the agreement, ALEC will deliver full design, procurement, and construction works for the Sphere Abu Dhabi development. The venue will feature advanced immersive technology systems, complex structural and mechanical engineering, bespoke manufacturing, and integrated sustainable building solutions. Officials have positioned the project as a flagship addition to Abu Dhabi’s cultural and entertainment infrastructure, reinforcing its ambition to attract international visitors at scale.

The project draws strong parallels with the original Sphere in Las Vegas, operated by Sphere Entertainment, which has been widely reported as one of the world’s highest-grossing arenas. It generated $379 million from 1.7 million tickets sold last year, highlighting the commercial potential of immersive entertainment formats on a global scale.

Sphere Abu Dhabi is expected to significantly boost tourism revenues and international visitation, positioning the capital as a centre for next-generation experiential entertainment. The 20,000-capacity venue will be located between SeaWorld Abu Dhabi and Yas Mall, strengthening a rapidly expanding leisure corridor.

The venue will host three main event categories, including Sphere Experiences featuring multisensory productions, concert residencies, and branded events ranging from sporting showcases to conferences and product launches. Its integration into the wider Yas Island ecosystem aligns with broader expansion plans that already include multiple world-class attractions.

The contract further strengthens ALEC’s standing as a UAE-based contractor capable of delivering globally significant infrastructure projects. Company leadership described the award as a defining milestone, reflecting confidence in local expertise to execute complex mega-projects without reliance on international contractors.

The company’s leadership noted that the development demands precision across every stage, from design integration and supply-chain coordination to on-site execution and quality assurance. Advanced digital engineering systems will be used to manage complexity while maintaining strict control over cost and schedule performance.

Officials also emphasised that the project’s scale and technical ambition will set new global benchmarks for immersive venue construction. The structure is expected to become one of the region’s most recognisable entertainment assets once completed, further enhancing Abu Dhabi’s cultural and tourism offering.
